Vienna Swimming Pools
Public Swimming Pools are very popular in Vienna, especially the outdoor venues in summer. Most of them are owned by the city of Vienna, are well maintained and enjoy a very good standard.
Virtually every swimming pool in Vienna includes several pools of different sizes and temperatures, often including a seperate toddlers' pool as well. The pools are surrounded by shaded and/or grassy areas with landscaping as well as outdoor sports areas (mostly soccer and beach volleyball) and meadows for sunbathing and chilling. Most of these venues feature a restaurant (or at least a buffet serving sandwiches and icecreams) as well as probably even a small shop (for newspapers, sunscreen, etc).
Finally, these pools are a great place to beat the heat - definitely!

- Hietzinger Bad
Nice pool with indoor section and several outdoor pools within a large recreation area (incl. beachvolleyball court and waterslide) located in rather upscale neighborhood in the western part of Vienna. The buidlings from the late 1970ies have been recently refurbished.
where? 1130, Atzgersdorfer Straße 14 - Stadthallenbad
Indoor pool located within the Stadthalle complex (comprising different sports and concert halls). Built for the European Swimming Championship in 1974, this rather functional place is definitely designed for the sporty type of visitor.

Maybe the best-known and most popular outdoor pool in Vienna - definitely owing to the magnificent View from the Grinzing vineyards over Vienna. This somewhat posh venue has a nice historic charme (wooden buildings from 1923).
where? 1190, Krapfenwaldgasse 65-73 - Gänsehäufel
Existing since 1900, the Strandbad Gänsehäufel is probably Vienna's most popular bathing site. This large recreational area with bars, shops, sports facilities and much more is located on an island within Alte Donau, an old Danube creek.
where? 1220, Moissigasse 21 - Laaerbergbad
One of the largest open air swimming pools in Vienna, this venue comprises pools, sports facilities and meadows. Besides a 50m sports pool with a 10m tower, a wave pool and several pools for children can be found as well as shops and restaurants. Really crowded on a nice day!
where? 1100, Ludwig-von-Höhnel-Gasse 2 - Kongreßbad
Located in the western part of the city in the Ottakring district, this municipal pool features landmarked red and white edifices dating back as far as 1928! The pools, water slides and sports facilities are enjoyed by a very diverse and multicultural crowd.
where? 1160, Julius-Meinl-Gasse 7a - Schafbergbad
This place is located on the Schafberg hill in a fairly upscale neighborhood and thus enjoys great views. Younger crowd as well as families, extensive sports offering: Join the aqua aerobics classes, play some beach volley or at least try a round of minigolf or table tennis!
where? 1180, Josef-Redl-Gasse 2 - Liesinger Bad
Somewhat smaller and less known than most of the other outdoor swimming pools mentioned here. But definitely worth a visit, most notably for families with small children: Various offers for children, ranging from toddlers pool to sand boxes, trampolines and table tennis.
where? 1230, Perchtoldsdorfer Straße 14-16 - Stadionbad
Inaugurated in 1931, the Stadionbad (right beside the Vienna Stadium at Prater) was soon a well known sports venue. One of the largest open air pools in Europe, it includes long water slides, a wave pool, a childrens corner, shops and restaurants and much more. Multicultural crowd.
where? 1020, Meiereistraße, right beside Praterstadion - Thermalbad Oberlaa
Owing to a thermally active region south of the city, Vienna can offer its very own thermal pool. Warm water (from 32 to 36 C) is supplied year-round by a sulphur spring. The area includes a wellness park (fitness and health center) as well. Open till late (22h00).
