Sports in Vienna
With its numerous public sports facilities within the city, the surrounding Vienna Woods and the nearby mountains, the city of Vienna definitely is a heaven for sports enthusiasts.
And of course the Viennese take advantage of the rich offering - engaging in the probably most traditional Austrian sporting activities Skiing, Soccer and Hiking as well as newer additions such as Nordic Walking, Bouldering or even Bungee Jumping.
The outdoor sports opportunities in Vienna are never ending. You will be able to choose from various sports compounds, soccer and football fields, swimming pools (indoor and outdoor) or cycling tracks at the Danube (Donau) river banks as well as numerous parks and the surrounding Vienna Woods.
Definitely one of the largest public parks within the city limits, the Wiener Prater is located in Vienna's 2nd district. It includes large wooded areas and numerous meadows all of which are open to the public for recreation and sports such as cycling and running.
The Vienna Woods (Wienerwald) begin right on the edge of the city to the West and the North. Within public transport reach from the city center, idyllic and well-signed hiking and mountain biking trails await you. On the way, small pubs and typical Heurige invite for a rest.
Last but not least, the artificial island Donauinsel within the river Danube is a vast recreation area inviting for larger scale running or cycling (the island is 21km long!). In summer, several water sports such as swimming, windsurfing and sailing can be performed here - and they even feature a wakeboard lift near the Praterbrücke.
When it comes to preparing for a stay in Vienna, buying sports and outdoor equipment is one of the most important tasks in order to be well prepared for what the city has to offer!
